Hi All,
I would like to get “Haus Technik” in to make a few technical amendments, most notably to power supplies and for AC. Ideally already next week. Before this though we should really do a good clean up (both in labs upstairs and downstairs, but mainly downstairs). This would mean putting all things in “right” place and making sure there are no obvious safety hazards. The worst case being that if they find issues that they may mention to others and can lead to lab shut down (they may even be able to instigate on their own accord).
I think for us it would also be good in terms of finding things and mental well-being (provided we can all agree where different items should be!). I would thus like to suggest that we all dedicate this Friday to cleaning up starting (e.g. 9) in morning. There is a lot of stuff standing around that is not actively used (largely my fault I admit), and also going through what we have may yield some pleasant surprises and identify things we need to order more of -- “consumable” optical components we should order asap. I will put a piece of paper by the door of lab downstairs where we can just enter these and we will go ahead and order.
I know this is not the most fun Frida, so I would invite you all for a beer/food after (on me) in e.g. Charlie P’s if you are available 😊
Some other reasons why good to tidy up. I should have several potential students visiting (also from out of town) and would be important to give them good impression. I will try make sure you all have opportunity to hang out with them independently if you want and get your feedback (they are mainly along physics/optics track)
Also, Matthias Schneider – good friend from TU Dortmund, who did all this action potential/phase change stuff during signal propagation – should visit in coming week(s). He is a fun/crazy guy and when he visits we should definitely all hang out with him. But would be important to make best impression.
Finally I think it is good to have a clean up day every few weeks since things pile up and this can cause avoidable stess.
We also have this whole electrophysiology setup now, which I spent the weekend reading through the cryptic instructions for. Time permitting would also like to explain how whole thing works (or is meant to work) from what I figured, but guess this is secondary (first priority is getting aesthetics of lab in order).
All the best,
Kareem
