Dear All, Thank you for attending the MAOI Node meeting yesterday. Just a quick summary of the main meeting/action points and a to-do list. For both of these, if there is something of relevance I missed please repost and include.. Summary of main conclusions: We agree to have a node meeting every second Tuesday of the Month at 17:00-18:00. For these meetings the following apply: The goal of these meetings is to (i) identify clinical research and application needs that can or can potentially be tackled by MAOI technologies, and thereby initiate collaborations and/or inspire directed research by MAOI members. These should serve as springboards to identify and guide progress (through research and ultimately translation) in active and relevant areas of clinical and medical applications. (ii) Develop and strengthen the MOAI community, in particular to also include/involve the benefactors (clinicians) of developed technologies. They will ideally be hosted by different or alternating groups each time (to alleviate organization/planning burden, increase their activity within Node, and maybe improve attendance from geographically different locations). Most certainly there will need to be some repeat hosts. They will be advertised broadly within MUW, not only within the node and MIP, but also to different clusters and platforms via respective representatives and outlets. Each meeting will have 1 or in some cases 2 presentations. 1 presentation will be by someone from the clinic (or directly involved in clinical research), describing their work with an emphasis on MAOI-relevant requirements/desires/limitations/etc. The second (optional) talk will be by someone from the node summarizing a particular technology or presenting a particular technological/application breakthrough in their area of expertise/lab. The website needs to be updated and all links need to be made functional. Most notably the mission statement needs updating. As do decriptions of technologies and expertise in links. Some appealing pictures would be good. A Sign-up page for receiving notifications (which is linked to by a QR code that can be presented at any meetings) needs to also be created. Mailing list needs to be updated and include all potentially interested persons. It should have a feature to unsubscribe at the end of each mail post. The cakes and savory snacks were most excellent, and we should all be mandated to perform the traditional Maori “Haka” dance (https://youtube.com/shorts/nL3FpMfMV6M?feature=shared) prior to public presentations as a display of unity and to instill adequate fear among our foes. To do lists: Everybody: Pictures: Upload pics to owncloud you think: (i) Might be nice as back drops or fly throughs on main MAOI website. These should ideally include something that might be recognizable to a clinician (complicated laser setups are all good but we should not have exclusively this). They should above all be visually appealing, and may also be collages, cartoons, schematics, etc. Maybe think glossy Science journal cover. (ii) Pictures that are relevant and showcase and/or explain your particular technologies. These will be used in section of website listing expertise and technologies. In each case share with me (this email address) via owncloud and email me (or upload text for) captions of each image. Please provide pictures (especially former) with highest reasonable resolution (ideally 300dpi). Format should be anything we can open in Adobe Illustrator. Due date: By end of February. Brief description of technologies you are working on: this should include (i) Brief text description (1 paragraph is fine, but not more than 3). This basically is what it does and what it can be / has been used for. (ii) 2-3 key references, ideally also including a current and accessible review article that is readable for someone not in your field (doesn’t have to be by you). (iii) A link to your research/lab homepage or any other project homepages of relevance. (iv) Pictures relevant to the above (optional, see above) (v) A picture (face shot) of you or your lab that we can show in the section for your technology (optional). The last one is one point I forgot to discuss yesterday and see if all are fine with, but I think adds a very nice personal and relatable touch. In composing/preparing above (as Wolfgang Weninger also mentioned yesterday) it is good to keep this as general and timeless as possible so we do not need to update all the time – the most current details of what you are working on and technologies can do etc. you can always update on your linked lab/project pages. Please upload the above onto owncloud and share with this email address, rather than sending per email. Due date: By end of February. Add people to MAOI mailing list: if you know anyone at MUW who you think should be part of MAOI mailing list we would like to include them (they can always sign off). The easiest thing would be to create an online spreadsheet of people on list and ask you to add people. But in the interest of ever increasing privacy regulation, that I am not up to date on, we will not do this, and I would ask you to simply email me e-mail addresses of people I can add. Within the next weeks I will try (with Ute and IT help) to create an online form where you can direct people to sign up (and create a QR code that links to this that you can share with people). But until then, please just send me email address(es) with subject “add to MAOI mail list”. Due date: open ended… Mission Statement: We discussed re-writing this. Reading it again I think it is not all too far off.. but I would propose something like the following (below). Please reply with suggested changes. The node consists of scientists developing novel microscopy and advanced optical imaging techniques, facilities offering these, and clinicians implementing these. The goal is to facilitate the translation of novel, cutting-edge and state-of-the-art techniques towards routine clinical as well as fundamental medical research implementations. This is achieved by providing a framework for regular discourse, exchange of ideas and knowhow, and establishing research and translational collaborations, among those associated with the node. Information on the technologies, and scientific/clinical interests of the affiliates can be found here: Techniques (link) Affiliated laboratories (link) N.B. there would be links between the Affiliated laboratories and Techniques on the respective pages as relevant. Due Date: Please provide any feedback also before end of February, when I hope we will be able to do first revamp of webpage. With the goal to have online shortly after. Other information: I will try to get two mailing lists set up. One for internal MAOI members and one for everyone we would like to invite to our monthly meetings. The former can be used for advertising open positions, grant collaborations, and the latter mainly just for advertising events (like monthly meetings) that also people not from MUW can attend. End of February I will also start working on the whole website update (and before then push to try get access to backend directly). I will also send points A-C of to-do list to all node members asking for their contributions in next days – if you have any points on these please let me know before end of weekend (21/1). @Richard: We need money for food and coffee in future meetings. Can you coax steering committee to make sure this is available. Don’t know about financial aspects, but maybe a 50-100 EUR or so budget for monthly meeting could be doable? (we can hopefully expect participation to increase also with broader publicity and clear presentation themes). Maybe could fight for in next steering meeting 😊 Thanks again and all the best, Kareem
