Dear Hubert, Thanks for your email! In response to your questions.. It’s variable, can be something you just discovered/observed and want feedback on, something ready for publication, or even something you did some time ago and think community might be interested in/not aware of. No criteria in this regard 😊. It will not impede publication but quite the contrary. You will get feedback from (probably) the very people who will review it. Only reason for not presenting might be (a) it is something you want to patent first (b) it is very novel and only half thought through and you are worried someone will steel your idea. The latter should be less of an issue. The community is very nice (as you know) and announcing “I’m doing this” will most probably result in a lower chance of someone scooping you than someone developing by serendipity and being then annoyed you stole their idea (if they present it here first they will be on record as first person to come up with). You might also get good feedback or collaboration partners.. So I wouldn’t hesitate unless (a) applies to you. It is foreseen to be in-person only. Beside the logistics of doing online also being quite great requiring extra manpower/costs, it will also limit attendance, and then there is the issue of registration fees (should they be the same). Dear committee, Thank you for organizing this conference. I had the chance to attend in a previous year when I was working at LightMachinery, before I joined Carleton University, and very much enjoyed it. We are considering submitting a few abstracts and hopefully having one or more of us coming to the conference. Can I please ask you two (likely naive) questions: 1. Contributions to your conference are typically associated with what stage of research: a preliminary stage (proposing a new concept along with simulations or preliminary experimental results) or a more mature stage (results that are essentially ready to be submitted or that have been submitted to a journal)? If we do present a preliminary concept and results, could this impede our ability to submit to a journal later on? 2. No meeting today (unless someone feels need for)

Dear All, I don’t think there is need for meeting today unless someone really feels need (let me know if so)… Also some of you mentioned cannot make. So let’s reconvene next week (and discuss any pressing things per email)… One quick update. I just got reply from González Herráez Miguel who I invited for talk way back in July. He mentioned he would still be interested (and very apologetic about long delay in reply), but understanding of no longer possible. He is guy who did the ocean wave sensing stuff, but also wants to introduce some tricks for bio-microscopy (very interesting guy that gives great talks). What is everyone’s take here. Should we still add him (at this point won’t make much difference, and we wouldn’t pay for anything), or tell him it’s too late but he can still submit abstract. Let me know your thoughts. Hi Stephanie, Good question. Not sure if can give exact numbers off the bat, especially for those further back. The general ballpark was around 50. I cc. SOC which contains Francesca, Thorsten and Michael, who can fill in some of the blanks better maybe for more recent ones they hosted. I paste below my estimates for each. If anyone else in SOC has better recollections than me please correct the below. I can get more precise numbers further back with a bit of work and fishing, but would be effort and require me tracking down people no longer in field and/or working for me anymore. I will try and do so, as this information can be useful in future for presentations and applications (but not sure how quick I can get during this time in August) – will write Thomas, Daniele, Celia, Michaela & Anita in this regard. Let me know if these ballpark numbers are ok for you for now and for sake of this application? (maybe ok to give a range in each one, if it is an open text form, like e.g. 30-40 or 100-110). Dear Stephanie, Just a couple of other quick suggestions on poster. It looks really nice! __ but I might propose the following.. - It would be good to also include web address explicitly (www.biobrillouin25.com ) on poster - with hyperlink in pdf. Since if distributed electronically also, scanning a QR code from computer screen is undesirable (also fail safe if people do not have smart phone with camera handy). -The file size of pdf should be <1Mb. There are no high res images that warrant 10Mb, and while I don't mind, some people might get annoyed getting sizable file attachments. -Might be idea to mention venue? - maybe a sentence describing scope of conference, something standard along the lines of "Annual meeting of the International BioBrillouin Society for Brillouin Light Scattering micro-spectroscopy in life-science and biomedical research and applications" or the like under heading or where ever aesthetically pleasing. Am just thinking if this poster is broadly distributed in microscopy and biophysics community, they may need some more context to understand what it is about __ - The Medical University of Vienna may also provide some admin and financial support. I should know more about this end of week or start of next, but in this case a criteria for them would be that their logo is featured somewhere also on poster. Can always add later, shouldn't be bottleneck for getting out, and will keep you posted on this front.
